Missing Manila

It’s close to 2 weeks since I left Manila for a 6-week training here in Minnesota. I left Manila with a heavy heart because I will be missing my family, most especially my little angel, Zion. But deep within
me, there’s that feeling of excitement and anticipation, knowing that I will be going to a new place, quite different from what I have and experience in Manila. I have been to the US before, but it was
different back then. I went to California to visit my aunt (Tita Layla) and uncle (Tito Nap), and went there with my Mom and Dad. It was different that time. The climate was similar to Manila (minus the
humidity and pollution). No need to be pressured because I was there for a vacation. No need to worry about what to eat and how to budget my money, because my financiers (my parents! hehehehe…) were there, plus Lola Teresa (Tita Layla’s mom) was there to cook Filipino food. No feeling of homesickness, since I
know I was with people whom I felt comfortable and warm.

It’s a totally different ballgame this time. Went here during winter wherein the temperatures could drop as low as -30degrees FAHRENHEIT (and people close to me know how I crumble in cold climates). A short walk to the nearest building can make your hands, nose, and ears, freeze, causing frostbite. And last Saturday night we had to walk for about a minute or two just to find a building that was open, for us to get to the skyways that connect one building to another (similar to the walkways in Dela Rosa in Makati). Talk about
suicide eh! Hehehehe… Remind myself to go to the beach as soon as I get back to Manila. I miss the sun and its warmth… Another difference is, I came not for a vacation. I came here to be trained for 6 weeks.  Thus giving the pressure, that when I come back to Manila, I should be "learned" or "enlightened" in some way. I am just very thankful that my mentors here are very patient and very helpful, ever willing to share their "tricks of the trade" with me. I am also very thankful that our managers here in the US are very
accommodating and has much concern for us like our manager in Manila. It makes things a little better. Third, being sent here with an entire budget good for 42 days, would mean mega-budgeting. I can’t simply splurge a whole lot of bucks in Mall of America in one or two visits. I have to take into consideration that I have to eat for the entire 42 days. Bad thing is, I can’t cook, which leaves me only two options - buy cooked food in the nearby food shops (like Arby’s, Subway, or Sampan), or go for the cheaper alternative - buy microwaveable food (God bless the person who invented the microwave oven!). During weekdays, I go for the microwaveable foods. During weekends, when go out for trips to mall, I go for the
first one - and I usually go for rice. God, I miss rice, be it plain, fried, garlic, bagoong, and even the "flavored" ones like arroz caldo and champorado. And lastly, it was a lot different last time because
I was with people whom I felt comfortable and warm. People whom I know genuinely care for me. People whom I can be myself. Very minimal adjustments. No leaving-behind. No misunderstandings. No faking. No stress. Just genuineness, sincerity, respect, and family love.

In my 2 weeks stay here, I already miss Manila. I miss the climate, the food, and the less-stressful life. I miss my friends back in Manila. Thank God for Rio, Koox, Lorraine, and Jun who are in either US or
Canada, for minimizing those homesick-moments by calling me or chatting with me (even during work hrs!). And last but not the least, I miss my family, most especially Mama and Zion. I miss the 3am wake-up-slap-on-the-face by Zion to ask for milk. I miss his laughter and his perky way of saying "MY MOMMY! MY MOMMY!". I miss Mama’s boisterous laughter everytime we make fun of Daddy or Zion’s nanny (bwehehehe!). I miss her "good morning starbright" greeting every morning. I miss the way she makes me feel at ease everytime I
feel like breaking someone else’s neck. I miss our usual Sunday schedule of going to Mass then lunch at Serye or Casa Verde at UP. I’m just counting the days - exactly 29 days - before I leave for Manila. I just hope the days pass by swiftly.

8th of December 2007, Quote for the Night:

"Divided we stand, Together we fall…"

(Together and Divided have been switched intentionally)

Let nothing separate one man from the rest of the pack… Not gender, not color, not character, not belief, not faith, nor status… Let no man be forgotten and left behind in both moments of joy and sorrow… As they say, we are and we should be one….

This is one of those moments wherein I miss the Sun…

Life Begins @ 30

10 years ago, I have always wondered how it was to be in my thirties. Just about ready to face the world at that time, I always thought that when someone reaches the age of 30, one is already old, as in "Matanda ka na!!". During that time, I thought that when one reaches  30, things become corny, because you are sort-of-required to be settled, cranky, old, and stiff like a piece of dry, fragile driftwood. In short, 10 years ago I thought that the fun and happiness of youth ends when one enters the 30-something-phase. Until November 19, 2007 came…

Yes. I celebrated my 30th birthday a week ago. For a change, I celebrated my birthday outside the country (well at least about 15hrs of it). This was my birthday gift to myself, a memorable birthday gift to myself. It was special because it meant a lot for me. For one, it was the first time I travelled abroad wherein I didn’t ask my parents to shoulder my expenses. It was a trip whose funding was 100% shouldered by me (airfare, accommodation, even pocketmoney). I was saving for it since April this year. Second, after 5 years, I was able to travel abroad again. The last 5 years had been a struggle for me, in terms of career advancement, personal, and family life. The trip was a respite from all the struggles I had in the last five years. It celebrated my "rising from the ashes". Lastly, that trip signified the transition I went through in the last 10 years, a transition that can be compared to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to become a butterfly.

Now that I have stepped on the 30-something-stage, I can say that it is not bad after all. I may have gone through several battles and challenges in my life. These battles may have left scars that would always remind me of past failures and disappointments. But I chose not to view them that way. Entering the 30-something-stage have taught me that things can always be viewed from a different perspective. That scars from the past can be viewed as markings of maturity, and an opportunity to rise and evolve. Entering this stage made me see that happiness and satisfaction can be achieved by cherishing what I have, and by taking things one day at a time. I may have made infamous decisions in the past, that will have repercussions in the present and future. But hey, what’s the use of dwelling in the past? Why not savor the present, enjoy "both worlds" (my close friends and family know what this "both worlds" mean), and look forward to a better future?

As I breathed my first air on my 30th bday, I thought of everything that happened in my past 30 years… and I say, "life begins at 30…".. ;-)

Vindicated

This entry will be very short. I just need to write this down.

De La Salle winning over Ateneo for the second spot in the Final Four…

De La Salle winning over the University of the East for the championship…

De La Salle winning after being suspended last season….

How sweet revenge is.

Kung bughaw ang kulay ng rebolusyon, LUNTIAN ang kulay ng tagumpay at paghihiganti.

Enough said.

ANIMO LASALLE!!!! :-)

Just Do It

While breezing through some old (very old actually) magazines, I chanced upon this old Nike ad. Nice to read.

Too often we are scared.
Scared of what we might not be able to do.
Scared of what people might think if we tried.
We let our fears stand in the way of our hopes.
We say no when we want to say yes.
We sit quietly when we want to scream.
And we shout with the others,
when we should keep our mouths shut.
Why?
After all,
we do only go around once.
There’s really no time to be afraid.
So stop.
Try something you’ve never tried.
Risk it.
Enter a triathlon.
Write a letter to the editor.
Demand a raise.
Call winners at the toughest court.
Throw away your television.
Bicycle across the United States.
Try bobsledding.
Try anything.
Speak out against the designated hitter.
Travel to a country where you don’t speak the language.
Patent something.
Call her.
You have nothing to lose
and everything
everything
everything to gain.
JUST DO IT.

Come to think of it, we do only go around this life once. As dark as it may sound, no one comes out of this (existence) alive. All of us would end up in graves, or for those who don’t want to be food-for-the-worms, an urn would be better. It’s just a matter of who goes first. Una-unahan lang. Why waste life? Why not make the most of out of it? Why live in a world of regrets and what-ifs? Why dwell on the past when there is something to look forward to the present and the future?

Those who know me can attest that I have made some unpopular decisions. I gambled at certain points in my life. Some of which resulted in success. Some were not as pleasant as the others. And though some areas from the past are murky, I chose not to drown in it. In my mind, I know at least, I tried. I took the risks. I was able to see things from both ends of the spectrum. Both the darkness and the light. I have seen it, and been through it all. I am taming the fear. I am learning to tip the scales for it to reach equilibrium. I am constantly learning the game. And I think, no one can and will stop me.

Eh Kasi Babae

Wake up and smell the flowers!! At kung sa palagay mo na nananahimik ako dahil sa aking pagiging babae, puwes think again. Ayoko na lang ng gulo. Ayoko rin bumaba sa EQ level mo.

Much respect to my male friends who have respect for women, and who think fair of women. Tunay kayong lalake. Stay that way.

OverDrive

Just finished my driving classes. It was actually a 5-hr course (portioned into 3 days), which I took to refresh my memory of the basics of driving, and just to get a feel of the wheel and the car. I took up a 10-hr driving class about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, I misplaced my student permit, and eventually, was unable to apply for a non-pro license. This time I’ll make sure to keep that student permit. I MUST learn how to drive. One of the reasons I took that new job was to force myself to learn how to drive. I don’t know, but I really admire women who can drive. Perhaps it’s a personal bias, but I have a high respect for women who knows how to handle the steering wheel and tame that mechanical animal. I have the impression they have this certain level of individuality and independence. It’s like having the attitude, "Hey I’m a lady. I am the driver of my own wheels, and I am the driver of own my life.".

Despite having an idea of what to do and expect, I must admit that I still need to recall a lot of things from my past driving lessons. I was just fortunate that my driving instructor (Kuya Dave) was patient with me. Part of Day One was like kindergarten, about 15-20 minutes of which were spent on the real basics - seating position, the pedals, steering wheel handling, and the different things one can find inside the car. The other half of Day One was spent on actual driving. Sudden stop count for Day1 - 4 - still excusable. On Day Two was a 2-hr stretch which involved crossing intersections, traffic signs, maneuvering, and parking. I must admit that I already got the hang of things - the hand-foot-eye-mind coordination. Sudden stop count for Day2 - 2 (yooohooo!!). Day Three was the most challenging. Kuya Dave and I drove to New Manila, in front of Mt Carmel church where there was this portion of the street which was quite steep. Hanging was the most important lesson of the day. The trick was to release the clutch slowly (without allowing the motor to die abruptly) using the left foot while releasing the brake and stepping on the gas very lightly (we don’t want the car’s engine to sound like those in F1 racing) using the right foot. Quite easy when you’re reading it right? But try it when you’re seated on the driver’s seat while your car is sliding backwards down a steep hill. Believe me, it took me 30 to 40 minutes to complete this seemingly easy task. I already thought of walking inside Mt Carmel Church to pray!! It was like being in the movie Fast and the Furious - I want to get out of the steep hill FAST, and Kuya Dave is getting FURIOUS because of the roaring car engine. Hehehehe… Sudden stop count due to hanging lesson - 4 (demmet!). Other than the hanging incident, everything is ok in Day3. Kuya Dave was really not THAT furious (medyo lang) at the end of the lesson. And I can say, that I had a good refresher course.

Right now I’m bugging my dad to allow me to drive within the subdivision using his car (I have no car of my own yet). I wanted to practice so that I won’t forget the driving lessons I just learned. I promised him that the "Puno ng Bayabas Incident" will not happen again, especially to his beloved Adventure vehicle. I hope that my Dad will be merciful enough to entrust his beloved car to my gentle driving skills. Oh well! I hope he agrees. Let’s get rollin’ baby! ;-)
